Su madre era una narradora muy imaginativa que influy\u00f3\u00a0 en su pasi\u00f3n por contar historias. A los seis a\u00f1os escribi\u00f3 su primer cuento sobre un hombre y un tigre de bengala. Se recibi\u00f3 de m\u00e9dico y se embarc\u00f3 como cirujano en el barco ballenero Hope que navegaba los mares del \u00c1rtico, luego en el Mayumba, un barco que viajaba a \u00c1frica, donde vivi\u00f3 todo tipo de aventuras. M\u00e1s tarde instal\u00f3 su consultorio\u00a0 y seg\u00fan \u00e9l mismo cuenta en su biograf\u00eda como ning\u00fan pacientee entraba a consultarlo ten\u00eda mucho tiempo para escribir y se dedic\u00f3 a hacerlo. Sus historias se volvieron tan populares\u00a0 que tom\u00f3 la decisi\u00f3n de abandonar la medicina y dedicarse exlusivamente a la literatura.
